Bolt Action Test Figures

Hi,

For starters, just a quick hail to all those who've been hit by Sandy.  We seem to have ducked the worst of it up here, just a couple of cold, crappy days, but I hope all and sundry have weathered the storm.
After my first run at Bolt Action the other week, I sat down with my pile of lead to sort out some figures to use in a list.  As I don't yet have the book (dear Santa . . . ), I used a combination of online army builders and nagging my buddies at the club to get the points straight, and ended up with this:

Veteran 1st Lt., Buddy, both SMG NCO + 10 conscripts, LMG, AT Grenades, Green (Free)NCO + 9 Veterans, all SMG NCO + 10 Regulars, NCO + 4 SMG, LMG ATR Regular = (2 figs) Regular Medium Mortar (3 figs) plus spotter
The idea is a good core of three full infantry squads, a few support units (for digging out entrenched units, helping to pin vehicles, and generating activation dice), and good morale support from the veteran lt.

I've got most of what I need to do this already, though I might need to pick up a blister of Soviet SMG figures, and have begun sorting and selecting.
As this is a much smaller force than I'm used to (for, say, FoW), I've been able to take a little more time with these than I usually would for a project that size.

So far, I'm pleased with the results.  I think the goal will be to get the whole force based and primed, and then knock out a couple of figures as a break between Impetus or other units.

These are the standard Battlefront 15mm Soviet figures, though I couldn't tell you from which pack in particular they come, as most of my Soviet stuff has gotten a little jumbled.

The money shot.  Looks like there's a few gloss spot that need touch ups.

I'm so used to trying to get these figures out and on the table that it's been a refreshing change to take a little time and see what I can do with them.

Ready for action!
Next up will likely be the first base for a Mongol Basic Impetus force.  The club is looking to do a sort of demo event in February, and as the event is vaguely medieval themed, I figured it would be an excuse to do up the Mongol figs I have.  Between that, these guys, the Antigonids, etc., I've got lots to keep me occupied for the forseeable future.

  1. Is there period you DON'T paint? Superb, I thought these were 28mm.

One day I want to try WW II East Front and I'd love to hear how Bolt Action (a skirmish game?) compares to FoW.

    1. Well, I've never done Pike and Shotte, medievals or chariot wars. Of course, I'm currently reading about Henry of Navarre, a Trojan-Hittite project is something I've been pondering, and before I die I'm going to paint Andalusians, so . . . . ;)

Bearing in mind that I've only played the one game of BA, it's quicker, less figure intensive, and less prone to mechanic manipulation. Much more infantry oriented. You can get tanks and support stuff on the table, but generally in bigger games, and as support to the infantry, rather than as the focus of the game. Plays fine in 15mm with no shifts in ranges, and is a fun evening / club game.

  2. You seem to have too much spare time. Can you send some over here?

    1. Ha! I was just thinking I don't have nearly enough to do all the projects I want to complete ;)

  3. Just what you needed, another period ;) Awesome-looking 15s. How many for a game?

    1. Maybe two-three dozen? Soviets seem to produce the largest forces, as they get a unit of free conscripts, and the guy in our club who went for a horde approach with Sovs ended up with less than 50. The list above is on the big side of average.

  4. By the way, I got the Bolt action rulebook if you need details. Am trying to decide whether to go with Bolt Action or Rate of Fire myself. Happily I can use the same figures for both.

  5. Very nice brushwork and I for one would like to see you do Trojan-Hittite project after this. Would be good eyecandy.

    1. Thanks, Anne. I agree - lots of nifty stuff in a project like that, and a little room for conjecture too ;)

  6. Looks very nice! Probably easier to go 15mm then 28mm for platoon level.

  7. They look bigger as 15mm. But are very good painted and maybe that's the reason why I think this is a bigger scale!
