. . . in the rigging.

Hi,

Hard to believe, I know, but I've got an honest to God painting post this week!  Some of you may remember a while back, I got very excited about Spartan Games' Dystopian Wars.  While the game is generally labelled "steam punk", I tend to think of it as more of an homage to the Verne / Wells vision, with a little cult of Tesla thrown in.  In other words, right up my alley ;)

Despite my early jump into the game, progress has mostly languished due to a lack of opponents.  It was with considerable delight, therefore, that I discovered that Watts, a regular opponent and dictator-for-life of the club message boards, had taken the dive into DW in a big way, having just blown his "birthday budget" on a bunch of DW Russians.  With the concrete prospect of a game in sight (400 points in 3 weeks), I've dug out my models and gotten to work.

These four make up my first squadron of Uwatsu-class frigates.  I've not yet named the ships - still deciding on a naming convention for small vessels.

The Uwatsu-class bring a few things to the table.  They're small and nippy, making it difficult for capital class ships to hit them with gunnery.  In a full squadron, they can coordinate fire to the point where they pose a real threat to larger ships.  Also, they're cheap, less than half the cost of a cruiser apiece.  The downside, of course it that when they do get hit, they tend to go to pieces.

As with any Spartan models I've seen the figs are top notch.  You can get a sense of the size of these ships in comparison to the 6 and 15mm figs around them, yet Spartan's managed to get distinct rivets, portholes, etc. on the ships.  Mindblowing, to be honest.

I should  have a game up this week, likely with Nick the Lemming, and maybe another painting post, but things will likely slow down for a week, as the Cub will be in town, and I'll be spending my available time with him.  I should have a good post for you the week afterwards, however, of both the 400 points of DW, and hopefully, our first game.

  1. I've seen these on sale at FRP quite a lot but had no idea of the quality. Even on sale they are pricey though. They do paint up very, very nicely.

    1. Depends on frame of reference, I guess. Compared to other integrated game-system producers, like GW or PP, they're pretty cheap. Around $15 gets you a fistful of little ships, 3 cruises or a "big'un" like a battleship or carrier. Starter boxes are under $50, and are a pretty good price break.

  3. Great start! Though quite small, they are loaded with detail and you do detail so very well. I've been tempted by this system but with no partner, I'll once again live vicariously through you!

  5. Thanks, I'll check it out. I have all manner of happy thoughts of this taking off at the club, so anything campaign friendly could come in handy.
